About Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdogs

Here are a few things to consider if you are thinking about adopting a Maremma:

This breed was developed to guard livestock in the field. They are protective of their pack whether it is a flock of chickens, goats, sheep or their human companions but generally, they are not aggressive.

Two things about their guardian instincts They patrol and roam their territory so proper fencing is essential. Secondly, they have a tendency to bark at almost anything. This can be a problem but I do know of dogs successfully homed in suburbia. It comes down to the right dog and the dedication of the owners.

As a livestock guardian dog, they are independent thinkers which may make obedience training a challenge. Having said that, they are intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement and treats!

Maremmas have a double coat which they shed twice a year. Their coats should be brushed out while they are shedding to prevent matting. If fur is a problem do not consider this breed. The upside of their coat is that it is self-cleaningdirt just falls of them. I havent washed our dogs since they were pups unless they rolled in something nasty!
