For many years it was widely accepted that American political diplomatic pressure was the reason for Australia's entry into the Vietnam war. However, top secret documents from the period indicate that Australia had volunteered the use of combat troops some time before the decision was announced in April 1965. Australia also urged the Americans to escalate the War by bombing North Vietnam and was totally indifferent to the views of the government in South Vietnam that it was supposed to be defending. All this occured in a political environment manipulated by the Menzies government so that these decisions could be made without any prior debate in the Parliament or press. In this edition of "War for the Asking", Michael Sexton goes behind the scenes of the high level meetings of the politicians and diplomats of Canberra and Washington, crushing the myths that have grown about the Vietnam years and giving valuable insight into the possible military and political crisis that world faces now.
