Lord Rivet leads the improbable expedition of odd characters. They charter an old paddle-steamer. They pack. They have a wonderful send-off. And everything goes surprisingly well. Perhaps the following extract from the first chapter, as opposed to a description is nearest the true representation of the book. :...Rivet was above all an experimenter and at an age when most of his friends were dull-eyed and chop-fallen and sunk in their club arm-chairs, he had turned his energies to the Arctic...The polar regions , he thought, could easily be made livable and he was setting up an expedition to prove it, but it seemed increasingly plain, as he plans developed, that the whole thing depended on Miss Pentagon... "I beg you to put this story down if you imagine it is the beginning of a romance. Lord Rivet is nearly sixty and Miss Pentagon, since I know she would not like her age to be stated too exactly, is somewhere over forty but well under fifty - so you see, there is very little chance of that. Also the leader is a single-minded mathematician with hardly any hair and Miss Pentagon is a single-minded mathematician with hardly any shape. Therefore do not hope for too much. And yet one cannot help knowing that life in the Arctic is full of surprises." The Voyage of the Eider is light-hearted and inventive and doesn't try too hard to be funny; and this first voyage makes one anxious for more. Quantity Available: 1.
