How did the Port Campbell cliffs and the Twelve Apostles take shape? How have breakwaters and marinas modified the beaches of Melbourne's bayside coastline? Why did London Bridge fall down? Eric Bird provides the first book-length study of a varied and interesting part of the Australian coast. The Coast of Victoria describes and illustrates the geology and scenery of hundreds of kilometres of coastline, explaining how it has evolved, how it has changed during the past few decades, what processes are at work on it, and how it is likely to change in the future. The book is presented in a way that will make it useful to students, teachers, research workers, people concerned with coastal management, and all those who have a general interest in the Victorian coastal environment. After an introductory chapter the coast is dealt with in a west-to-east sequence, illustrated by more than 150 maps, diagrams and photographs. Particular attention is given to changes that will occur if the sea level rises in the manner widely predicted as a consequence of the enhanced 'Greenhouse Effect'. The aim is to stimulate interest in coastal studies and to provide a foundation for the next phase of coastal research in Victoria. The book also provides information about the Victorian coast that will improve its conservation and management in the next few decades, in the way that J. A. Steers' Coastline of England and Wales (1948) stimulated the designation of Heritage Coasts in those countries. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Environment & Ecology; ISBN: 0522845444.
