Around the Block (2013) is an Australian feature film written and directed by Sarah Spillane. Set in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Redfern, Around the Block tells the story of sixteen-year-old Aboriginal Australian Liam Wood, who is torn between his passion for acting and following his father and brother into a life of crime. Meanwhile, his Year 11 English teacher, American Dino Chalmers, must practice what she teaches in order to find her freedom.
Curriculum links Around the Block is suitable for secondary students in Years 10–12 in the subject areas of English, Media Studies and in addressing the cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. Around the Block can also be used to support the teaching of pastoral care programs.
