With its fourth festival on the horizon, Multimedia Arts Asia Pacific (MAAP) had established itself as a locus – or, more aptly, a node – for new media practices in the Asia-Pacific. Under the artistic direction of Kim Machan, Brisbane-based MAAP emerged as an organisation in 1997 and an event in 1998. It sought to create infrastructure to accommodate technology-based works, as well as to create a nexus and dialogue between community, art-form and the multimedia industries. In keeping with a collaborative ethos, partnerships had been formed with the corporate sector (Macromedia was a 'platinum' sponsor), the arts sector, government and tertiary education institutions.
