8MMM Aboriginal Radio in Alice Springs runs on the smell of an oily rag, the enthusiasm of its motley Indigenous crew and the misguided intentions of the whitefellas in charge. For the three Ms of Alice Springs – missionaries, mercenaries and misfits – saving Aboriginal people from themselves is hard work. Especially Aboriginal people who expect to be heard on the radio and in the office.
8MMM Aboriginal Radio is a six-part narrative comedy series about tolerance, self-determination and cultural understanding and why, when all else fails – which it usually does – it's good to laugh. Produced by Brindle Films and Princess Pictures, 8MMM Aboriginal Radio is the brainchild of Indigenous actor, writer and director Trisha Morton-Thomas and her colleagues at Brindle Films.
NB: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the program contains images and voices of people who have passed away.
Curriculum Links '8MMM is not trying to "educate" anybody. It is an "FYI" and only a snap peek into the absurd world of central Australia – the organisations, government policies, race relations and unlikely friendships of this part of the world. My hope is that people might be inclined to educate themselves after viewing 8MMM.' – Trisha Morton-Thomas
8MMM Aboriginal Radio is suitable viewing for students in Years 9–12 in the subject areas of Civics and Citizenship, English, History and Media Arts.
