Vince Giarrusso's film Mallboy (2001), chosen for the Director's Fortnight in Cannes 2000 and screened nationally in 2001, began as a gamble for all involved. Producer Fiona Eagger put her career on the line, taking first-time filmmaker Giarrusso's story because she believed it was a winner. Giarrusso, who had never set foot on a film set, wrote the screenplay, directed the movie and composed the music for the soundtrack. Kane McNay graduated from playing a minor role in SeaChange to starring as Shaun, the protagonist, and went on to win an AFI Award for his performance. And Nell Feeney, who plays Shaun's mother, Jenny, came to the project after having twins and taking a long break from acting.
