Dichondra repens or Kidney Weed is an evergreen perennial herb that only grows to 4cms in height, making an effective ground-cover for shady areas.
The leaves are distinctly kidney-shaped and its creeping habit is due to its ability to form roots at stem nodes as they touch the ground.
The spring to summer, tiny yellowy-green flowers are produced though generally considered to be insignificant.
Sometimes seen in pastures, woodlands and forests, it will grow where bare ground is available and/or competition is minimal, especially in shaded areas under trees.
Well cultivated, weed free soils are best with some added organic matter to help retain access to moisture. Little required maintenance required.
There are 10 species in the Dichondra genus which are generally considered to be ground covers, sometimes being used as a lawn alternative.
Repens is a Latin word meaning 'creeping
