Tourist attraction in Charters Towers QLD
DESCRIPTION
Phone enquiries - please quote property ID 36062.
This restored 120-year-old workers cottage is centrally located in the heart of Charters Towers CBD.
Established in 1992, the building has been part of the growth in the region's tourist development.
Initially set up to be a showroom for a local floor sanding business it has grown into a "must see" place for the ever-increasing number of travellers who are discovering the charm and lifestyle of this historic gold mining city.
Over the last 30+ years, the little timber cottage has had many varied uses, from showroom, heritage themed cafe/tea rooms, craft, heritage restoration products and for the last 15 years it has provided an educational experience for local and regional schools. Each year many hundreds of primary schoolchildren participate in the Gold Panning experience in an outdoor area at the north side of the cottage. This activity is one of the highlights of an excursion to the city. Students learn about the importance of gold mining to Australia's development and get to try their luck at finding real gold in the gravels sourced locally.
Inside the building, are many relics and plans of the glorious heyday of Charters Towers.
The four internal rooms are in fact a mini-museum with enclosed verandahs back and front. (see photos).
On the south side of the cottage, a heritage-style timber and iron machinery shed is in the process of being developed to actually have working displays of gold ore processing equipment (see photos)
The machinery shed houses some rare and significant examples of antique steam powered machines, a huge Ruston&Hornsby 6HR oil engine and many smaller engines in various stages of restoration. The current owners are reluctantly offering the land commercially zoned (retail), the buildings and their contents on a Walk-in Walk-out basis. For health reasons, it is not possible to continue the operation of the business.
It would suit a couple or a motivated individual, with a desire to run an educational tourism business in a city (with no traffic lights!) The cottage and its activities have a well-established internet presence (Google - The MIners Cottage Charters Towers) and see the reviews. 0414967369 for more information.
