Trachyte rock, particularly Bowral Trachyte from Mount Gibraltar, was used extensively in Sydney's development, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was used for building facades, footpath kerbs, and other architectural features, notably in the Sydney CBD. For example, the former Bank of Australasia Building on George Street and Societie Generale House on the corner of George Street and Martin Plaza were constructed with Bowral Trachyte.
