1970 CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE:
This 1970 Corvette Stingray has been specified and built to the highly desirable combination of chrome-bumper, big-block convertible. This combination existed for only a handful of years in the third generation (C3) of Corvettes.
The car has been fully restored with the target of being as visually close as possible to its appearance when it first came off the assembly line. The “Build Sheet”, which is still adhered to the fuel tank (see photos), confirms the car retains its original specification of 390 HP, 454 cub-in engine, Turbo-400 (auto) transmission, power steering and power brakes. The build sheet also confirms the car also retains its very attractive original colour combination of Light Saddle interior, over a Mulsanne Blue body, with a White soft top.
The body has been fully restored by Corvette restoration expert, Glenn Pellegrino, including the rework of the panel gaps (doors, engine hood and decklid) to be of even and narrow spacing. This fit quality now far surpasses the original factory fit which is notoriously poor on C3 Corvettes. All the chrome body parts (bumpers, badges, trim, etc) have been re-chromed or replaced.
The interior has been fitted with replacement carpets and new trim parts where required and new colour coordinated Corvette seat belts have been fitted. The clock has been upgraded with the quartz movement kit for better accuracy and reliability, and the tachometer has been upgraded with the electronic conversion kit to improve its accuracy and reliability compared to the mechanical cable-drive system, but without changing the original appearance. The car retains its original AM/FM push-button radio, which is in good operating condition. The car’s steering wheel is a chrome-spoked deluxe model, and a colour matched centre armrest is fitted.
Under the hood the engine bay features all new chrome and other plated parts for a factory-fresh appearance. The correct chrome rocker covers and air cleaner are fitted, including new decals. A full set of new chrome ignition shields including the correct braided plug wires are installed on the engine, and the coolant hoses are all GM stamped and fitted with the correct “tower” style hose clips. The cooling system also includes the iconic Harrison header tank.
Original style cast iron exhaust manifolds are fitted to the engine, which not only provide the correct appearance, but also ensure the iconic big-block exhaust rumble exits the car from the rear, rather than from under the hood - which is the case if tubular type headers are fitted.
Mechanically, the car has a fully rebuilt engine with overhauled transmission. The brakes have been rebuilt and upgraded with sleeved calipers, fitted with O-ring type seals, which is a “must do” for all C2 and C3 Corvettes. The car has recently been fitted with a new mechanical fuel pump and a rebuilt power steering pump.
The car includes a new, reproduction Owner’s Manual, as well as a set of reproduction delivery pamphets. It also comes with a matching blue car cover.
