Toilet training, often referred to as housebreaking or potty training, is a crucial aspect of raising a Shiba Inu puppy. Like all dog breeds, Shiba Inus require consistent and patient training to establish good bathroom habits. Here are some tips and guidelines to help you successfully toilet train your Shiba Inu.


Start Early

Begin toilet training as soon as you bring your Shiba Inu puppy home, typically around 8 to 12 weeks of age. Early training is essential for establishing good habits and preventing accidents in the house.


Establish a Routine

Consistency is key. Create a regular schedule for feeding, playtime, and bathroom breaks. Take your puppy outside to the designated bathroom spot at the same times each day, including after meals, naps, and play sessions.


Choose a Designated Bathroom Spot

Select a specific area in your yard or outdoor space where you want your Shiba Inu to relieve themselves. Consistently taking them to this spot helps them associate it with bathroom time.


Use Positive Reinforcement

When your Shiba Inu puppy successfully eliminates in the designated area, offer enthusiastic praise, petting, and even treats. Positive reinforcement helps reinforce the desired behaviour.


Keep a Watchful Eye

Keep a close eye on your puppy, especially during the early stages of training. Look for signs that they need to go, such as sniffing, circling, or whining. When you see these signs, immediately take them outside to the designated bathroom spot.


Supervise and Limit Freedom

Until your Shiba Inu is fully housebroken, it's essential to limit their access to the house. Use baby gates or a crate to confine them when you can't supervise them closely. This prevents accidents and gives you more control over their training.
