Shetland Sheepdogs, with their striking double coats and elegant appearance, do require a fair amount of grooming and maintenance to keep them healthy and looking their best. While they may not be the highest-maintenance breed, they do have specific grooming needs that owners should be aware of.

Coat Care

One of the most distinct features of Shelties is their double coat, which consists of a long outer coat and a dense undercoat. Here's how to maintain their coat:

Regular Brushing: Shelties require regular brushing to prevent matting and reduce shedding. Brushing a few times a week, or even daily during shedding seasons, helps remove loose hair and keeps their coat in good condition.

Are Shetland Sheepdogs High Maintenance?

Shetland Sheepdogs are considered moderate maintenance dogs due to their grooming needs. While they don't have the extreme grooming requirements of some long-haired breeds, they do need regular brushing, occasional baths, and attention to their coat to keep it free of mats and tangles. Additionally, maintaining their dental, ear, and eye health is essential for their overall well-being.
