The breed's development can be attributed to breeders selectively crossing various terrier breeds, including the Black and Tan Terrier, the Bull Terrier, and the Greyhound.

The Wire Fox Terrier's distinct look and traits were solidified during the 19th century, and they became a popular choice among British nobility and sporting enthusiasts. They were recognised by kennel clubs on both sides of the Atlantic, and their legacy as spirited and tenacious hunters endures today.

The Wire Fox Terrier belongs to the Terrier group, a classification known for its feisty and energetic members. These dogs are small to medium-sized, with a height typically ranging from 33 to 41 centimetres  at the shoulder and weighing around 7 to 9 kilogrammes .


Breed Coat, Colour, and Appearance

One of the most striking features of the Wire Fox Terrier is its unique coat. It's dense, wiry, and weather-resistant, providing excellent protection in harsh conditions. The coat colour is predominantly white, with black or tan markings. The head is often predominantly coloured, and the ears are typically V-shaped and carried erect.

Their sharp, expressive eyes radiate intelligence, and their ears, when not standing upright, fold over to create a charmingly inquisitive expression. The body is well-proportioned, with a straight back and a tail that is traditionally docked.


What two breeds make a Wire Fox Terrier?

The Wire Fox Terrier is the result of careful breeding and has its roots in several terrier breeds, but two primary contributors were the Black and Tan Terrier and the Rough-Coated Terrier (now known as the Airedale Terrier). These breeds were crossed to create the distinctive Wire Fox Terrier we know today.

Historically, Fox Terriers, including Wire Fox Terriers, had their tails docked for practical reasons. This practise was aimed at preventing injuries while the dogs worked in the field, particularly when they went down into burrows after prey. Today, tail docking is a subject of controversy, and in many places, it's considered illegal or unethical unless performed for medical reasons.
