Toilet training, also known as housebreaking or potty training, is an essential part of raising a well-behaved and hygienic Clumber Spaniel. These dogs are known for their gentle disposition, but like all puppies, they require consistent and patient training when it comes to bathroom habits. Here's a guide on how to effectively toilet train a Clumber Spaniel.


Start Early

Begin the toilet training process as soon as you bring your Clumber Spaniel puppy home, ideally when they are around 8 weeks old. Puppies have limited bladder and bowel control, so early training is crucial.


Establish a Routine

Consistency is key to successful toilet training. Establish a regular schedule for feeding, playtime, and bathroom breaks. Puppies usually need to relieve themselves shortly after eating, drinking, waking up, or playing.


Choose a Designated Toilet Area

Designate a specific area in your yard or outside your home where you want your Clumber Spaniel to do their business. Take them to this spot consistently, using the same door to go out each time.


Use Positive Reinforcement

When your puppy successfully goes potty in the designated area, offer enthusiastic praise, treats, and affection. Positive reinforcement helps them associate the right behaviour with positive outcomes.


Supervise and Anticipate Needs

Keep a close eye on your puppy, especially during the early stages of training. Watch for signs such as sniffing, circling, or restlessness, which may indicate that they need to go outside. If you catch them in the act of having an accident indoors, interrupt them gently, and take them outside immediately to finish.


Be Patient

Toilet training takes time, and accidents are normal. Do not scold or punish your puppy for accidents; this can create fear and confusion. Instead, focus on positive reinforcement and consistency.

Clean Accidents Thoroughly

When accidents happen indoors, clean the affected area with an enzymatic cleaner to remove any lingering odour. This discourages your puppy from returning to the same spot.


Gradual Freedom

As your Clumber Spaniel puppy becomes more reliable with their bathroom habits, you can gradually give them more freedom indoors. Start by giving them access to one room at a time until you're confident in their ability to avoid accidents.
