Consistent Schedule

Establishing a regular feeding and bathroom schedule is paramount when toilet training a Cairn Terrier. Puppies have smaller bladders and need to relieve themselves more frequently than adult dogs. Aim to take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after meals, after playtime, and before bedtime.


Crate Training

Many Cairn Terrier owners find crate training to be a valuable tool in housebreaking. Dogs have a natural aversion to soiling their living area, so a properly sized crate can help prevent accidents indoors. Be sure to gradually introduce your puppy to the crate and use positive reinforcement to create a positive association.

How Long Can a Cairn Terrier Hold Its Bladder?

The ability of a Cairn Terrier, or any dog, to hold its bladder varies depending on several factors, including age, health, and activity level. Generally, adult Cairn Terriers can hold their bladder for about 6 to 8 hours during the day. However, puppies have smaller bladders and may need to go out more frequently—usually every 2 to 4 hours.

 

It's important to adjust your bathroom schedule according to your Cairn Terrier's specific needs. Pay attention to their signals, such as circling or sniffing, which indicate they need to go outside. Over time, as your puppy grows and their bladder capacity increases, you can gradually extend the time between bathroom breaks.
